Petrissage
Kneading massage technique that works deeper muscle layers.
Petrissage encompasses kneading, squeezing, and rolling techniques that work deeper muscle layers than effleurage. These movements help break up muscle knots (adhesions), improve circulation to specific areas, and release tension held in deeper tissues. Petrissage is more commonly used in Swedish and deep tissue massage than in glide-based modalities.
How it is used in practice
When a client experiences petrissage during a professional bodywork session, they might feel a methodical compression and release sensation on their muscles. The practitioner uses hands or forearms to grasp, lift, and roll sections of soft tissue. This technique is often applied to areas like the back, shoulders, or legs, where muscle density allows for effective manipulation. It's typically integrated after warmer, gliding strokes, allowing the practitioner to address areas of deeper holding. Clients often report a feeling of release and increased flexibility in targeted regions following these movements, which can be tailored in depth to their comfort and preferences.
